Fostering Community

Nurturing a sense of community involves connecting people.

And letting people know what others are doing is a great way to help people feel connected and informed.

For people within your community or organisation, it’s about keeping them in the loop.

What are other people doing, how is it going, how can people get involved?

There is probably too much activity to keep everyone apprised of everything that is happening, but choosing at least one event each month to share with the whole community is a nice place to start.

Especially, choosing an event that many people wouldn’t otherwise know much about, helps to make people feel included.

So, tell them how that recent event went. Provide a space for people who attended the event to share it with the rest of the community.

Better yet, include everyone in the preparation for an event, particularly if it’s one they won’t be going to. Then let them know how it went afterwards.

Even if everyone doesn’t attend every event that the community has going on, that doesn’t mean they can’t feel included in the excitement of those activities.

Maybe a new introductory course went well for new interest. Great. Share that with your regulars. It may not be a course catering to them, but that doesn’t mean they won’t be thrilled to know that others share their interest and are keen to get involved.

If you already have a newsletter, that would be a great place to share with your community what others in the community are up to.

It’s amazing what a little more internal communication can do for the overall morale of a community.
